The world of payments is becoming more digitalized every year, and at the heart of this development is Nexi Digital Finland, part of the Nexi Group. This expert organization, based in Espoo, is responsible for payment terminal and software development, ranging from physical terminals to back-end systems and 24/7 maintenance.
By investing in expertise, cloud technologies, and innovation, Nexi Group established a center of excellence for payment service solutions that offers its customers innovative and reliable payment systems. Espoo was chosen as the location for the development center because Finland is one of the most digitized societies in the world. Today, Nexi Digital Finland employs more than 100 software professionals from Oulu to Åland, with the goal of developing payment solutions for the future that are not only technically advanced but also reliable and user-friendly.
“Finland has a good education system and people graduate in technical fields. We had enough core staff, so it was a good foundation on which to build,” says Mikael Siirtola, head of department, who is responsible for product development for the Android product family. “Finland has sufficient social infrastructure. A long history of expertise combined with the fact that Finland is a good country for product development."
Finnish craftsmanship
Despite its Europe-wide operations, Nexi Digital Finland is local at heart. Products developed in Finland, such as SmartPOS, enable customization according to the specific needs and preferences of the domestic payment field, faster response to market demand, and seamless integration with local payment technology regulatory standards.
According to Mikael Siirtola, every coder who has worked on the Android product family's payment terminals is based in Finland. "This has been done by hand and out of love for the craft."
The Android-based SmartPOS is an excellent example of local innovation, as the software has been produced entirely in Finland. Such local solutions enable rapid response to market changes and customer needs.
Everything under one roof
"What you see on the payment terminal screen when you go to pay is just the tip of the iceberg," says Mikael Siirtola.
Nexi Digital Finland's development work extends from payment terminal applications to background services such as receipt management, reporting, and data transfer for accounting purposes. For example, at unmanned electric car charging stations and gas stations, payment terminals transfer information such as fuel quantities in addition to payment transactions. This enables smarter and more efficient business management.
All software is thoroughly tested before going into production, and Nexi's first robot testing environment, which automates the testing process and quality assurance, was built in Finland. However, testing is not only technical, but also involves, among other things, monitoring the EU's information security standard, which is managed by Nexi Digital Finland's team specializing in information security.
"We take care of payments across Europe"
Nexi Digital Finland's vision is to be a reliable partner for both employees and customers. The People First mindset generates bold ideas and innovations, supported by solid research and development work. Thanks to our strong product range and commitment, we are always one step ahead and continuously develop our operations to meet the needs of dynamic markets.
In Finland, we have invested not only in the market area but also in software development experts. Team spirit is constantly being developed, and investing in well-being is part of everyday life. When employees are happy, expertise stays in-house and this happiness is ultimately passed on to customers. Nexi Digital Finland continues to promote the digitalization of payments in Europe and develops payment solutions utilizing artificial intelligence and cloud services, among other things. At the heart of everything is local expertise, which makes cutting-edge payment solutions possible.
